[edit] Points in Favor
Santa Cruz is known for its outstanding artists. We need to support our arts Community. The nonprofit arts industry in Santa Cruz is a $32 million industry providing over 750 full time equivalent jobs and paying over $3 million per year in taxes. Tourism is important to our economy. Visitors who come here for arts and cultural events spend twice as much in local businesses as other tourists. Creativity is a renewable resource and the arts are a nonpolluting industry. Our community needs this important economic resource.
This is NOT just an "artsy" program - it is one of economic stimulus. Art space has been successful throughout the United States in promoting the economic and cultural vitality of neighborhoods where artists can reach their full potential creatively and the neighborhood can be revitalized economically. [edit] Points Against
This program has nothing to do with stimulating our local economy. This money would be better spent in creating more jobs and job training, more low income housing, and helping the homeless to become productive, and get off the streets. Artists should not rely on government to support them unless they are not able to work.
