[edit] General Description
The renovation and expansion of the Parkway Central Library includes the construction of a flexible, modern addition that will dramatically expand the Beaux-Arts library on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The project meets all the goals of the stimulus package—it will create more than 1,350* jobs during the 36 month construction period, generate $76.7 million in labor income, flow $134 million back into the economy (including $89.2 million in total direct spending on construction activities), and increase city tax revenues and visitor spending by an estimated $4.3 million. In order to incorporate green building practices, the project has set a goal of attaining a Silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. Once the new Parkway Central is completed and open, it will continue to support the economy by offering expanded services to job seekers and entrepreneurs—including help with résumés and 300 computers with high-speed internet access—ensuring that everyone has the tools they need to succeed in today’s economy, free of charge.
