Award Description: JAG funds support all components of the criminal justice system, from multijurisdictional drug and gang task forces to crime prevention and domestic violence programs, courts, corrections, treatment, and justice information sharing initiatives. JAG funded projects may address crime through the provision of services directly to individuals and/or communities and by improving the effectiveness and efficiency of criminal justice systems, processes, and procedures. The cities of Auburn and Opelika will use their allocations of JAG-R funds under this program to purchase multiband radios. The multi-band mobile radios will cross VHF/700 MHz/800 MHz, as well as some UHF frequencies. The cities currently experience interjurisdictional communications gap between their police departments and Lee County Sheriff?s Office. This equipment will provide needed multi-jurisdictional communications interoperability thereby bridging this gap. Lee County Sheriff's Office will use their allocation to provide video cameras for new patrol vehicles, and provide cameras for Sheriff Investigator vehicles that do not currently have camera systems.
Project Description: The Cities of Auburn and Opelika and Lee County intend to use this funding to provide for improvements in inter-agency communications ability and upgrade outdated and obsolete equipment. Auburn and Opelika will purchase radios that will allow them to communicate on the same frequency as the Lee County Sheriff's Office, thus enhancing the ability to respond to multi-jurisdictional emergency situations.
