Award Description: Assisting unemployed and under-employed immigrant and refugee families in accessing social services and employment opportunities in Guilford County. Rehabilitating and weatherizing homes to increase energy efficiency, decrease energy costs and reduce carbon emissions in Buncombe, Haywood, Henderson, Madison and Transylvania counties. Providing in-school and after-school one-on-ones supplemental academic assistance using the Great Leaps curricula for students at-risk of academic failure. Members maintain a strong presence in the community by participating in service projects and collaborating with other community agencies that serve children in Guilford County. Tutoring and mentoring to students who are at high risk of becoming obese and developing weight-related health problems. Members will work with teachers and health professionals to develop nutrition lessons, exercise programs and health fairs. They also work with school nurses and counselors to help identify physical and mental health needs within the schools in Lenoir, Martin and Pitt counties.

Project Description: Members will serve directly and coordinate efforts and volunteers to rehabilitate and weatherize homes to increase energy efficiency. Members will provide 8,832 hours of literacy tutoring. Members will provide weekly nutrition and physical activity classes for 300 elementary and middle school over-weight students. Members will provide tutoring and skills development services to 100 students at alternative schools sites.

Jobs Summary: Due to Recovery funding, we created and retained 91 AmeriCorps member positions (Full-Time and less than full-time). These members provided the activities described in the project description section. We also created and retained 6 AmeriCorps staff positions. (Total jobs reported: 62)
