Award Description: Provided Head Start services for 146 preschool children and families in Columbia County in New York.
Project Description: We provided two staff training sessions on serving children with disabilities on August 20th and 31st. These trainings were persented by an occupational therapist, a special education teacher and a speech therapist. We provided 2 days of staff training in Child Plus.net, a computer tracking system that will allow staff to track and share information about services provided by our program. We budgeted funds for maintenance for our new classroom space. In the first quarter of 2009-2010, we spent monies to clean and paint these three rooms.
Jobs Summary: We have added a temporary position of Center Assistant who is available to work in all classrooms to cover for staff when thay are absent from regular assignments during educational or other leaves and is funded from Sept. 2009 to june 2010. We used the ARRA COLA of 1.84% of our funding level to temporarily increase the salary scale for all 35 Head Start employees to be paid from July 1, 2009 to Sept 30, 2010. We increased the rates of pay for the 6 Nutrition Child Aides to make them more equitable with teacher assistants who have similar program responsibilities. Each NCA received a wage increase of $.34 per hour and is effective on 7/1/2009 till 6/30/2010. To support retention of qualified staff, we increased hourly wages by $.25 for the 17 Head Start staff who have 5 years or more experience in work at COI's Head Start program.
