Award Description: This is a prospective cohort study. We will recruit and follow the HIV-infected pregnant mothers at the same time or shortly after their enrollment in SMARTT, which will be in the 2nd or 3rd trimester of pregnancy and through delivery (we will identify women enrolled in SMARTT in the second trimester, but will only enroll in this study in the third trimester, prior to delivery). We will then follow the HIV uninfected children born of these mothers who are enrolled in SMARTT until 2 years of age. Infants are seen annually in the SMARTT study protocol beginning at birth. We will have additional contact with the mothers during their 3rd trimester of pregnancy, once to obtain a blood specimen and three times by telephone to administer three 24-hour dietary recalls over a two week period. The maternal and perinatal outcomes of interest in the HIV-infected mothers in this proposal will be recorded as part of the existing SMARTT protocol.
