Award Description: Increased demand for services to homeless population.
Project Description: Community Healthlink (CHL) is a health care for the homeless grantee. As the economy declines, CHL has been experiencing increased demand for services. Additionally, many newly homeless people need assistance with securing health insurance. Massachusetts law requires health insurance for all residents; however, many people who are newly unemployed who may have lost insurance. CHL staff observe that homeless individuals typically experience higher rates of insurance lapse due to difficulty completing the documentation requiremetns and/or difficulty reciving mail which impedes their ability to complete required updates. CHL applied for IDS funds to create a medical assistance position to support the work of the primary care team. CHL successfully recruited a medical assistant who began in this role on 9/14/09. Since hiring into this position, CHL served 31 new patients who received 42 visits. Between 7/1/09-9/30/09, CHL provided care to 150 uninsured patients. The medical assistant provides direct care to homeless patients and supports the work of the primary care providers and nurses. The addition of the medical assistant increases the efficiency of the team.
