Award Description: With IDS funding IHC will be able to hire a pediatrician to provide integrated medical care to the increased number of infants and children that are being seen in the Medical Department. IHC has developed a strong immunization program and has one of the highest rates of children immunized at age two. In the last four years IHC has dedicated staff and resources to this project and has increased the immunization rate by 82%, from 39% in 2003 to 71% in 2007. Currently the IHC has only part-time Family Nurse Practitioners (FNPs) to see these clients and does not have a pediatrician on staff. Providing integrated pediatric services will further strengthen this program and provide a more seamless continuity of care for children and families. A Medical Assistant will also be hired to work with the pediatrician. Over the last three years the number of unduplicated patients at IHC has increased by 45%. The demand for IHC services is projected to increase as the economic situation worsens and employers lay off and also cut health benefits to employees. All of the safety net clinics and the county hospital are bracing for a large increase in the number of uninsured patients who will need access to medical care. Additional resources are needed to assist the Eligibility Coordinator to enroll patients in financial programs, and to strengthen the diversity of the payor mix. The Medical Office Assistant will enroll patients in programs, develop referral relationships with other agencies, schedule health talks by providers to the community, and enroll providers in different health plans. The Dentist/Hygienist will provide additional dental services that are needed. This staff person will work on Saturdays and will expand the services that the IHC’s Dental Department can offer.

Project Description: In the report period the dentist had seen 106 patients with 383 encounters. The agency is unable to produce data at this time due to the pediatrician being hired in late September. Data for the pediatrician will be reported in the next period.

Jobs Summary: The IHC hired one pediatrician and one dentist in the report period. (Total jobs reported: 1)

Project Status: Less Than 50% Completed
