Award Description: This Administrative Supplement if for salary support for a graduate research assistant who is a memeber of an under-represented minority in biomedical science. The research is an extension of the current active project (AI24421) and will entail testing hypotheses about the role of immunity in determining the population structures for both relapsing fever Borrelia species and Lyme disease Borrelia species. These additional studies will include comparative studies of the serotype - and strain-specific antibody responses. by Mus musculus or Peromyscus leucopus to the Vsp/Vlp of the relapsing fever agen Borrelia hermsii of to the homologous OspC proteins of the Borrelia burgdorferi. Our overall working hypothesis is that the commonly observed serial and mixed infections of reservoir mammals, such as Peromyscus leucopus, by two, three of more strains of a Lyme disease Borrelia species is the functional equivalent of antigenic variation of a rodent by a single strain of a relapsing fever Borrelia species.
