Award Description: Measurements of the 13C/12C of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and the ratio of dissolved O2/Ar gases are proposed during an oceanographic cruise in the north Atlantic Ocean during 2010 as part of the GEOTRACES program. The objectives of these measurements is, first, to determine the spatial distribution of the 13C/12C with concurrent measurements of cadmium and, second, quantify the roles that gas exchange, biological productivity and mixing play in controlling the d13C and cadmium distributions in the ocean. An overall goal, from a paleoclimate perspective, is to improve our ability to interpret past changes in the earth carbon cycle and climate using 13C/12C and cadmium recorded in deep sea sediments as proxies for unraveling changes in the ocean carbon cycle.
