Award Description: American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) for Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) Performance Assessment (PA) Computing Platform (Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) for Carlsbad Field Office) Statement of Work for Procurement of PA Computing Upgrades ($200K) The primary WIPP PA computing platform consists of a cluster of Hewlitt Packard (HP) AlphaServers running Open Virtual Memeory System (VMS) Operating System (OS) and related supporting hardware such as additional servers, power supplies, disc drives and tape drives. Technical support of the AlphaServers running Open Virtual Memeory System VMS OS is diminishing, and becoming increasingly expensive. Additionally, augmentation of the current capabilities, such as increased calculation speed and a higher level of detail in the models, is restricted due to the cost and availability. For this activity, the WIPP PA computing platform will be upgraded to a cluster of Linux/Intel based platform and the overall computing power of the WIPP PA computing platform will be increased. Universities and other Companies have moved and are moving toward Linux/Intel based platforms. The upgrade will facilitate the preservation of the current capabilities, with a reduction in overall calculation times and annual maintenance cost. The decreased analysis time will allow for more changes in the repository design to be assessed, as well as a shorter time required for the evaluation of other waste types. Another benefit from the upgrade is the increased user base and support base compared with the current system. Activity: Purchase Hardware and initiate installation of computing system
