Award Description: Dental Van & Equipment Purchase: The ARRA CIP award funding for this project allows for the purchase and updating of patient-related equipment which is necessary for appropriate care and comfort of Center patients. The award will also fund a mobile dental van which will allow outreach to the underserved members of the community. The mobile dental van project will supplement the existing program services and increase overall access to oral health services in a cost effective manner. Transportation barriers in accessing dental care will decrease. The utilization of modern/mobile equipment will improve initial patient care, follow-up and quality improvement. Certified EHR Purchase: The CIP award will allow the Center to implement an Electronic Health Records and Practice Management system that will promote not only operational efficiencies but also the overall well-being of the Centers patients. With 19,974 patients generating 65,608 visits (UDS 2008), an Electronic Health Records system will facilitate disease tracking, comprehensive care and allow for efficient flow of information for Center patients to their other health care providers (hospitals, laboratories, other specialty providers).
Project Description: Dental Van & Equipment Purchase: Since CIP funding was awarded, the following purchase of equipment was made: 5 specula illumination systems out of 10 budgeted at the cost of $ 1,110.05. The progress on the purchase of the mobile dental van is in its early stages and is following the timeline as indicated in the CIP application: July to December 2009 research and evaluate mobile units, conduct procurement process, award bid. The Dental Program Manager is currently researching other mobile dental vans in the state, learning best practices and lessons learned from their mobile dental van process. The Dental Program Manager has contacted various builders and contractors to obtain specifications so that CIP funding will be used in the most cost-effective manner. Certified EHR Purchase: The Center EHR team is currently screening vendors and is in contact with other FQHCs including HCCNs to collect best practices and lessons learned in previous EHR purchases/installation. Due to the enormous financial and operational impact on the Center, extreme due diligence is mandatory.
