Award Description: This is a capital improvement grant that will be used to fulfill our community health center's needs related to a growing overall volume of patients and of uninsured patients, specifically. The number of patient encounters has increased by 800-1000 per month over the prior year. Uninsured patients are the fastest growing volume of patients treated at the health center cluster and they require many services that cannot be accessed elsewhere due to their lack of health insurance. Captial dollars will be leveraged in three projects: 1) expand capacity by leasehold improvements at a second site in the same neighborhood where the women's health program will be moved; relocate admin space to this same annex location; 2) renovate space at the existing Vine Hill site after the women's health program relocates to better support pediatric care, increase dental capacity, and improve overall workflow by redesign of the waiting room and registration space; and 3) purchase badly needed capital equipment--including a new General Ledger software system, an EKG machine, and a new telephone system for the entire clinic as the current one was purchased used more than 10 years ago and is poorly performing with few options to improve its outdated technology and hardware. Expected deliverables: increased capacity to serve additional dental, pediatric and women's health patients (3214 additional patients to be served in 6247 additional encounters) and employment for .4 FTE healthcenter employee and 2.87 FTE construction employees.
Project Description: The grant was awarded on June 29th, 2009. Since that time we have awaited HRSA's final approval to access funding for capital renovation projects--the largest component of our capital grant. To date, final approval has not been received and therefore, no construction/renovation dollars have been drawn down from the federal government. General Ledger software purchase and implementation, telephone system installation, and EKG purchase began in late September 2009 and those expenses will be reimbursed through drawdowns in October 2009.
