Award Description: WIA Adult $9,386,433 CFDA 17.258, WIA Dislocated Workers, $32,706,420 CFDA 17.260, WIA Youth, $20,834,103 CFDA 17.259
Project Description: The subrecipients who receive the bulk of the WIA Recovery Act funds are reporting their activity separately. The following represents projects undertaken by the Department of Labor and Workforce Development. Return to Work Program - to reimburse employers for On the Job Training (OJT) for recent UI exhaustees. $1,875,000 is allocated and the project is less than 50% completed. Youth Corp Crew Project - Recruit youth with developmental and intellectual disabilities and place them in a wide variety of community service projects. Project cost is $56,500 and is completed. Returning Young Veterans - To hire a young returning veteran for each of the 8 Youth Corps sites to expand the number of community service projects. Allocation is $309,600, project is less than 50% completed. Bulk Training - To buy training in quantity (thereby obtaining the courses for less) from NJ community colleges. $987,807 is allocated, project is less than 50% completed. Project Connect is a competitive grant program open to entities with the demonstrated capacity to provide counseling, and other employment related services to individuals with language and other barriers who might not otherwise make use of the services provided at the One Stop offices. Applicants must have documented successful prior experience in providing the type of services as described above. $3,500,000 is allocated and the project is less than 50% complete.
Jobs Summary: The majority of the jobs created were in the summer youth program. Youth were placed in jobs in public agencies such as parks, libraries and local municipalities and also worked in landscaping as camp counselors and in clerical positions. Some worked in the private sector as customer service representatives, in the child care industry, in the food industry, as painters and some worked in manufacturing among other activities. Also jobs were created to oversee the youth program as monitors, as well as program coordinators, education specialists and clerical and administrative assistants. (Total jobs reported: 2,562)
