Award Description: THE PURPOSE OF THIS SUPPLEMENT REQUEST IS TO HIRE NEW KEY PERSONNEL AND PURCHASE NEW EQUIPMENT. SPECIFICALLY, TO HIRE A POST-DOCTORAL FELLOW TO CONDUCT IN VIVO MEASUREMENTS OF OXIDATIVE STRESS. THIS WILL: 1) REDUCE ANIMAL NUMBERS NEEDED, AND 2) INCREASE THE SCIENTIFIC IMPORTANCE OF THE RESULTS. TO HIRE THE POST-DOCTORAL FELLOW, PURCHASE OF A RODENT ANESTHESIA WORKSTATION IS NECESSARY. AWARD OF THIS SUPPLEMENT WILL: 1) ENABLE A TREMENDOUS INCREASE IN SCIENTIFIC OUTPUT, AND 2) SUPPORT THE ECONOMIC STIMULUS PLAN BY ENABLING THE HIRING OF 1 NEW STAFF.
Project Description: We have placed the order for the rodent anesthesia station and are currently awaiting its arrival. We are still searching for the post-doctoral fellow who would meet the requirements mandated by the Recovery Act Supplement. If we continue to be unsuccessful in this search, we are strongly considering amending the supplement to allow for hiring of a Research Associate instead of a post-doctoral fellow within the next 3 months. This change would not alter the main goal of the supplement: to enable a tremendous increase in scientific output and support the economic stimulus plan by hiring new staff. In the meantime, we have been conducting ex vivo experiments to optimize the conditions for most effective delivery of spin-traps and detection of signal by L-band EPR in vivo.
