Award Description: This award was intended to provide a summer research experience for an undergraduate student in the context of the parent grant. A student was hired from Illinois College. Due to limitations of the award, the student can no longer be employed after this quarter, as funding is limited to summer months. The remainder of the award cannot be spent until May, 2010.
Project Description: The overall purpose of the award is to develop a mouse model in which to study fatigue during chronic viral infections. We have completed a significant portion of the first two aims of the grant. The student has participated by learning and performing bench assays relevant to the project. This has freed up more experienced staff for other duties. Participation in the project has definitely increased the student's interest in research as a component of his career. However, the lapse in support over the school year is a severe impediment to engaging his interest long-term.
Jobs Summary: The student gained experience at performing a number of laboratory techniques under the direction of senior laboratory staff. However, due to constraints of the award, we are only able to employ the student during the summer months. This limitation has created an unnecessary hardship for both the student and the lab.
