Award Description: The goal of this Administrative Supplement to the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center Core Support Grant (2P30 CA 13148-38) is to provide funding for the recruitment of a clinical investigator who is early in his/her career and evinces a strong commitment to pursuing a career in basic science, translational and clinical research as it relates to brain tumor etiopathogenesis or treatment. This program is geared to recruiting a young physician investigator with exceptional promise and who has recently completed postdoctoral research or subspecialty training, with a specific focus on those who have completed or shortly will complete training in neuropathology with a focus on malignant brain tumors. This recruit would assume a tenure-track, junior faculty position in the Pathology department, Division of Neuropathology with appropriate adjunctive appointments in one or more basic or clinical science departments. This Neuropathologist will have been jointly co-recruited by the Recruitment Committee comprised of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Director, the Pathology Chair, and the Division Director of Neuropathology who will serve as Chair, in concert with the Program Leader in Neuro-Oncology and the Brain Tumor SPORE Director. The New Faculty Member would be provided with a Class A Research Laboratory of approximately 480 to 640 ft2, situated in close proximity to those of one or more of the Neuro-Oncology Program or Brain Tumor SPORE¿s senior faculty investigators. Access will be ensured to common use laboratory space for common use equipment (centrifuges, freezers, high-throughput DNA/RNA analyzers, radioactivity spectrometers) and walk-in cold rooms/warm rooms as they exist throughout the UAB research space. Within the first 6 - 9 months of the 2-year tenure of this supplemental funding, we intend to identify and recruit a young physician-scientist neuropathologist, with salary and start-up support to be provided during this 2 year grant followed by continued support for an additional 3 years. During this time, the New Neuropathologist would work with his/her Mentoring Committee members to obtain independent career development awards and grant support so that they can become an independent investigator. As described in the attached letter from Dr. Edward E. Partridge, Director Comprehensive Cancer Center, 5,000 net ft2 of Class A laboratory space will be allocated for use by the Neuro-Oncology Program and Brain Tumor SPORE on the third floor of the Comprehensive Cancer Center. This space, which should become available in the spring of 2010 after it has been completely renovated, could be used to house the research program of this new Neuropathologist.
