Award Description: Based on previous experience as an EPA Brownfield Remediation Job Training grantee (2005 and 2007), STRIVE intends to offer a 12-week ERGC training program to qualified candidates in each year of the three-year grant period. To better prepare trainees for the post-Brownfield cleanup and construction phase, we are adding training for other 'green collar jobs, including remediation technologies and the installation of technologies that use alternative energy. We are adding significant value to the ERGC program by integrating these green collar hard skills training components with the Brownfield remediation training, including Introduction to Green Building Efficiency, Basic Construction in Electrical, Carpentry and Plumbing, Weatherization (building retrofits, energy audits, air leak testing, and insulation), and Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Installation. Our Brownfield remediation job training program has already been offered in tandem with the STRIVE Construction Skills 2000 (CS2K) Pre-Apprenticeship Program in recent years. STRIVE and its partners found that the expanded skill set put those who had construction skills and environmental certifications in the highest demand by unions and employers so much so that our partners urged us to incorporate the training over the remaining three years of the program. Within a three-year time period (2009-2012) of the EPA grant, we will provide environmental remediation technology training to at least 150 individuals (30 per cycle; 2 cycles per calendar year for the first two calendar years and 1 cycle the third year). Leveraging the ERGC program with STRIVE’s CORE+ attitudinal (soft skills) / job readiness training in preparation for comprehensive 'green collar hard skills training, at least 113 participants (75%) will be placed in environmental remediation or other green jobs upon completion of the program.
