Award Description: FY 2009 Recovery Act Justice Assistance Grant Program in Washington State. The program consists of nine local and state initiatives. The Local Formula Distribution program is designed to fund projects of local importance to the state's smallest agencies, while the Gang Enforcement/Intervention and Multi-Jurisdictional Narcotics Task Forces are designed to maintain on-going local initiatives while local budgets are unstable. The Prosecution Restoration initiative is intended to retain nearly half of the counties' deputy prosecutors. One initiative is a combination local/state initiative that is funding of State Patrol officers for assignment to the regional Multi-Jurisdictional Narcotics Task Forces. The remaining four state initiatives are Drug courts, Gang Threat Mitigation in prisons, Offender Reentry into the community, and Sex Abuse Recognition Training for treatment, intervention and law enforcement professionals.
Project Description: Retain and create 164 jobs in the primary areas of prosecution, gang investigation, narcotics investigation, and supplemented part-time patrol positions in small agencies. It is estimated that half of the state's deputy prosecutors and gang/narcotics investigators would either be terminated or transferred to other duties in the absence of this funding. Sub-recipients under the Local Formula Distribution projects will procure a variety of equipment to improve the safety and efficiency of local law enforcement. Types of equipment will include a limited number of vehicles, individual officer equipment (belt radios, tasers, etc.), car mounted computers and radar units.
