Award Description: The Gadsden Police Department is the Prime Recipient of $199,603.00 of which the Attalla Police Department gets $32,068 as a sub-recipient. Both departments are using Recovery funds for equipment purchases. The Gadsden Police Department is also using $113,736 as the department training budget for the next three fiscal years beginning October 1, 2009. The Gadsden Police Department plans to construct a new training facility using local funds, however a portion of Recovery funding, $53,797.00 will be used to equip the facility. No funds have been expended by the Gadsden Police Department at the time of this report. Once the new training facility is operational, the Department expects to train our own personnel at a significant savings. Other area agencies will also benefit by the opportunity to train without associated travel costs. We also expect to attract officers from across the region, many of which will lodge and shop in the Gadsden/Etowah County area.
Project Description: The Gadsden Police Department will use this grant to fund our training and assoicated travel budget for the next 3 years. We also will use a portion to purchase equipment for a new training facility. We have yet to start construction of the new training facility. Using grant funds for training and travel will free local funds that can be used toward the construction of the new training facility. The training facility will allow Gadsden Police Department to train our own officers at a significant cost reduction as well as to offer free and low tuition options to area agencies. The Attalla Police Department has purchased a fully equipped police, cruiser radar detectors and alcosensors with their funds.
