Award Description: The COPS Hiring Recovery Program (CHRP) provides funding directly to law enforcement agencies to hire and/or rehire career law enforcement officers in an effort to create and preserve jobs, and to increase their community policing capacity and crime prevention efforts.

Project Description: On September 14, 2009, the first new police officer hired with COPS grant funding began employment with the City. While waiting to attend the South Carolina Police Academy for certification, the officer has been undergoing field training. The new officer will attend the police academy the third week in October, and will receive training there for nine weeks. When the officer has completed his training at the academy and received his certification, he will be assigned to the police department's community policing program, known as the Community Action Response Team (CART). The CART team is a hands-on group of officers who work closely with community residents to address public safety-related issues in the community.
