Award Description: Development of a comprehensive, easily accessible public resource database of images, videos, and animations of cells from a variety of organisms, including both cell architecture and intracellular functionalities, as well as stimulate the economy through the creation and retention of 18 (7 full-time equivalents) positions. The database will include images acquired from current collections, publications, and by recruitment. Access to the database will be open and over time advance research with a secondary positive impact upon human health and education. We will design and implement the electronic architecture for image and video submission and acquisition, annotation, accession, and recovery for large scale growth and storage; populate the database with reviewed images, videos, and animations; assess the effectiveness of the database for contributors and users, incorporating feedback-based modifications; and seek long-term support to ensure access and maintenance and appropriate linkage with other publicly available databases.
