Award Description: Funds are awarded from the federal Corporation for National & Community Service to provide support and expansion of AmeriCorps State & National programs. This investment is a strong vote of confidence in the value of national service in engaging citizens in addressing unmet needs and strengthening communities.
Project Description: Funding is provided to the Hastings Literacy Program, Nebraska State Probation, and University of Nebraska Medical Center - Munroe Meyer Institue for enhancing their national service efforts. Additionally, funding is provided to Omaha Healthy Kids Alliance, Rural Corps of Sourth Central Nebraska, and University of Nebraska Medical Center - Munroe Meyer Institute to support and sustain conventional operating programming through 'match replacement' - using grant funds to meet matching resource requirements arising from economic downturns in the impacted communities. Examples of services provided include: adult literacy, English as a Second Language, education and support for families & teachers addressing developmental issues, and reducing the recidivism of those on probation in rural Nebraska through improving education and employment opportunities.
Jobs Summary: Positions created are AmeriCorps national service members. They provide dedicated individuals with the opportunity to expand their skills, better their communities, and prepare others to successfully pursue employment. National Service Participants have the option of serving quarter time term of service which equals .25 FTE, half-time term of service which equals .50 FTE and full-time term of service which equals 1.0 FTE. Currently with this grant 3 full-time member positions have been filled (3.0 FTEs) and 1 half-time member positions have been filled (.5 FTEs) and 5 quarter time member postions (1.25) for a total of 4.75 FTEs.
