Award Description: Formula ARRA match replacement funds enable four subgrantees to continue providing services in their respective communities. St. Rose AmeriCorps members have been trained in construction skills and in addition to recruiting and managing volunteers in post Katrina rebuilding efforts are serving alongside the volunteers. Piney Woods members act as mentors for community children and younger students on campus which includes tutoring, facilitating community service projects and leadership development activities. Grenada AmeriCorps members provide tutoring to k-8 students. LIFE/Project LINC members provide skills trainings to consumers with disabilities, enabling consumers to remain living independently in their own community, and also strive to transition individuals in assisted living back into their own community.

Project Description: ARRA match replacement funds enabled four formula recovery subgrantees to continue providing services in their respective communities. Grenada AC members have provided 10,000 hours of tutoring and literacy services to 670 students. LIFE/LINC AC members have recruited 350 volunteers who served 3,700 hours providing transportation services, skills training, companionship, mentoring, everyday tasks, and home modifications, including building wheelchair ramps and installing handrails and grabbars for individuals with disabilities. These activities promote inclusive involvement and accessibility across all areas of life and support interdependence among all community members. 325 individuals received skills training and counseling, and 100 individuals were able to remain independent (able to remain in their home) due to services provided by AC members and non-member volunteers. Piney Woods School AC members recruited 78 volunteers who provided 10,000 hours of service in the after school program and at numerous service projects, including collaborations with Boys & Girls Clubs of Central MS and Habitat for Humanity/Jackson affiliate. Of the 128 students receiving tutoring services (400 hours total) by Piney Woods School AmeriCorps members, 100 have demonstrated improved academic success. St Rose de Lima AC members recruited 2039 volunteers for services including rebuilding homes destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. From the time the recovery match replacement funds were awarded to September 30, 2009, 6 homes received rehabilitation, weatherization, and/or energy efficient services, enabling 6 homeowners to remain in their homes.

Jobs Summary: Due to Recovery funding, we created and retained 101.96 of AmeriCorps member positions. These members provided the activities described in the project description section. We also created and retained 4 of AmeriCorps staff positions. (Total jobs reported: 106)
