Award Description: This American Reinvestment and Recovery Act sponsored grant will invest in public transportation in rural and non-urban areas by purchasing new vehicles for more efficient and effective transit operations and support, upgrade various technological systems, and invest in new administrative and maintenance facilities for transit providers.
Project Description: The overall purposes and expectations of this grant program as they relate to each subrecipeient are 1) to enhance the access of people in nonurbanized areas to health care, shopping, education, employment, public services, and recreation; 2) to assist in the maintenance, development, improvement, and use of public transportation systems in rural and small urban areas; 3) to encourage and facilitate the most efficient use of all Federal funds used to provide passenger transportation in nonurbanized areas through the coordination of programs and services; and 4) to provide for the participation of private transportation providers in nonurbanized transportation to the maximum extent feasible. As of this quarter the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) has been awarded $11,299,461 for the purchase of new vehicles, support equipment, technological upgrades, and the construction of new transit facilities. WisDOT is currently in the process of contracting with rural transit providers and managing the purchases of federally funded goods and services; sub-awards have been made to 32 rural transit providers.
