Project Description: As a state program that provides independent living services to older individuals who are blind, WVDRS conducts activities that will improve or expand such services and help improve public understanding of the problems of such individuals. Specifically, ARRA funds are being spent in WV to accomplish four major objectives: (a) to conduct training projects to increase staff expertise in the field of blindness and significant vision loss with the expectation that this increased knowledge-base will improve the quality of services provided to older West Virginians with permanent vision impairments; (b) to implement new training programs that teach consumers to conduct peer-to-peer mentoring support groups; (c) completion of a Customer Satisfaction Survey as an outcome evaluation tool that will be administered to all consumers who have received and completed services (on a pre- and post-service basis); and (d) to purchase video magnifiers and adaptive aids to assist older people with visual impairments to have technology to enable them to see and read any standard print and be better able to participate in home and community activities. All of these activities have been planned and or are in different stages of being ordered, purchased, or completed.
