Award Description: A state program to provide independent living services to individuals with significant disabilities, support the operation of centers for independent living and the Statewide Independent Living Council, provide training on the independent living philosophy and outreach to unserved and underserved populations, conduct studies and analysis and present information to policymakers to enhance independent living services, and support activities that increase the capacity of independent living service providers

Project Description: A state program to provide independent living services to individuals with significant disabilities, support the operation of centers for independent living and the Statewide Independent Living Council, provide training on the independent living philosophy and outreach to unserved and underserved populations, conduct studies and analysis and present information to policymakers to enhance independent living services, and support activities that increase the capacity of independent living service providers

Jobs Summary: The ARRA grant for Independent Living Services provided under the Recovery Act assists New York State in providing independent living services to individuals with significant disabilities. It will help to fund the operation of private, not-for-profit centers that provide an array of services that assist New Yorkers with disabilities to live integrated and self-directed lives. ILCs assist individuals with disabilities with living, learning and work to remove barriers to full participation in to the local community and beyond. VESID administers base funding for 39 Independent Living Centers (ILCS) throughout the state. ILCs are governed by a majority of people with disabilities and staffed primarily by people with disabilities. The State Education Department will award the funds to ILC vendors through a competitive process which is under development. There are no job estimates at this time. (Total jobs reported: 0)
