Award Description: Earthquakes are a hazard in most parts of California. In northern California, the Berkeley Seismological Laboratory (BSL) and the USGS Menlo Park collaborate closely to provide timely and reliable earthquake information to the federal, state, and local governments, to public and private agencies, to researchers nation- and worldwide and to the general public. For this purpose, the BSL operates high quality seismic stations in Northern California. Data from these stations also contribute to monitoring earthquakes worldwide, and data are used nationally and internationally by earthquake scientists. Equipment at many of these stations is outdated, and has reached or exceeded its lifetime. The ARRA award to the Berkeley Seismological Laboratory supports upgrading the data logger equipment at these sites, as well as providing funds to improve the overall robustness of the data collection and reporting system.
