Award Description: Through this program, SCANPO and its partner, the United Way Association of SC, will work together to strengthen nonprofits in disadvantaged and hard to reach areas in SC. SCANPO serves as the statewide network, information center, and advocate for SC?s charitable nonprofit sector. It assists nonprofits in strengthening their leadership, management, financial and public policy capabilities to accomplish their respective missions. Grant funds will support the implementation of a 2-year project, Serving, Supporting and Strengthening Nonprofits for a Better South Carolina, which will build the capacity of 20 nonprofits in hard to serve and economically challenged areas around the state. This project will provide technical assistance, training and mentoring to smaller nonprofits in SC, particularly those serving economically disadvantaged rural areas. These nonprofits need resources to bring their governance and accountability practices up to the established best practices and build their capacity to better serve the needs of their communities. In addition to serving these nonprofits, grant funds will be used to build the capacity of SCANPO in the critical areas of organizational development, program development, and evaluation of effectiveness by increasing functionality of the database; increasing and strengthening constituent reporting procedures; creating a streamlined and user friendly website to include information on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), as well as state and federal agency listings; and by increasing SCANPO?s visibility as a central resource for capacity building for nonprofit organizations in SC.
