Award Description: To support the preservation of jobs that are threatened by declines in philanthropic and other support during the current economic downturn.
Project Description: Support for this objects conservator position begins at the start of the Museum's fiscal year on January 1, 2010.
Jobs Summary: 1 Conservator (Technical). Objects conservators work to stabilize and conserve our diverse collection of three-dimensional objects, from ethnographic works made using fragile organic materials to 20th century bronze statuary to archaeological works such as ancient textiles and ceramics. Conservators are critical to the health of The Field Museum's anthropology collections, and our conservation team encompasses critical expertise in paper, textile, organic, and objects conservation skills. The Museum relies on its talented conservation staff to care for these objects and protect them in perpetuity. Objects from the collections are used for purposes such as exhibition, research, loans to other museums, and public education. The Museum holds large collections of finely made objects from all over the world such as textiles from Madagascar, historic Chinese rubbings (the largest collection in North America), Tibetan thangkas, and African beaded objects including royal tools, crowns, and other regalia. Archaeological collections include artworks and material objects from seminal sites such as Hopewell, Ohio; Kish, Iraq; Cerro Narrio, Peru; Etruria, Italy; and Marajo Island, Brazil. Many of our collections are not only aesthetically valuable but also extraordinarily rare, such as textiles from ancient Egypt and the Philippines. Preservation of this conservator position ensures we can meet the demand for preparing loans to other institutions and for exhibition requests, such as our upcoming Masterpieces of African Art exhibition, and more than one planned exhibition on early China.
