Award Description: This project uses administrative supplement funds made available by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) to stimulate the economy through the procurement of additional U.S. manufactured equipment needed to accelerate production of reliable research findings by Bridges to the Baccalaureate student trainees on the cytotoxic effects of various plant extracts on human mammary cancer cells. Specifically ARRA funds are to be used to purchase additional biosafety cabinets, pipetting instruments and vortex mixers to create four additional mammalian cell culture workstations. In addition, AARA funds are to be used to create a multiuser mammalian cell culture facility, which includes a carbon dioxide incubator, a bench top centrifuge with tissue culture rotor, a refigerator, a microplate reader and a waterbath. The additional cell culture work stations and multiuser facility made possible by this ARRA grant will be used by Bridges to the Baccalaureate student trainees engaged in the 2010 summer research component of this Bridges' project at California State University, Sacramento. Acquiring this additional equipment will reduce 'wait times' and provide student researchers the opportunity to modify and replicate experiments to accelerate production of reliable data within the short time frame of the program. It is anticipated that all student trainees will complete their projects and present their work at a local 'Research Symposium held at the end of the session; and that a greater number of students will be able to present their results to the broader scientific community at conferences that invite student presentations.
Project Description: Purchase orders have been issued to vendors for the following equipment items: 2 biosafety cabinets, 5 sets of single channel pipettes with stands, 6 sets of multichannel pipettes with stands, 5 automatic pipettors, 2 vacuum pumps, 5 vortex mixers, 1 carbon dioxide incubator, 1 bench top centrifuge with tissue culture rotor, 1 microplate reader, 1 waterbath, and 1 refrigerator. This list of items includes all items approved for purchase from ARRA funds, except for 3 small workstation centrifuges. Because of price increases, there may not be sufficient funds remaining in the grant to purchase these three centrifuges To date, the only equipment item received is the bench top centrifuge with tissue culture rotor, and no payments from ARRA funds have yet been made to vendors. It is anticipated that all equipment items will be received and installed by the end of the next quarterly reporting period and that all ARRA funds will be expended by that time. The additional cell culture work stations and multiuser facility made possible by this ARRA grant will be used by Bridges to the Baccalaureate student trainees engaged in the 2010 summer research component of this Bridges' project at California State University, Sacramento.
