Award Description: The supplemental funds of this award are to support the summer employment of a UC Merced undergraduate student to participate in research associated with my current NIEHS-SRP R01 project. The aim of the award is to provide a research experience for an undergraduate student in order to engage the student in the practice of scientific research and encourage future pursuit of a career in science. Employment of an additional student on the primary project also helps to increase the scope of experiments and sampling at our field site, and thus helps to accelerate current project research progress.
Project Description: The supplemental funds of this award are to support the summer employment of a UC Merced undergraduate student. During summer 2009, Adam Mazzotti, a UC Merced senior in the Earth Systems Science program, participated in research associated with my current NIEHS-SRP R01 project. Adam assisted with field sampling and sample processing at our field site following standard EPS methods. He was trained in, and then assisted with, sample analyses methods for sediments and water. He worked with a post-doctoral research associate on the design and testing of a laboratory reactor system to simulate cycles of oxidation and reduction in soil- and sediment-water systems. System testing and further modifications are in progress.
