Award Description: The award funds services to the Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge from the Student Conservation Association's Conservation Intern (CI) program, which recruits and places qualified young people for environmental and conservation service projects. An SCA intern will serve as a General Resource Management Intern, working with refuge staff to monitor and care for Attwater's prairie-chicken broods and assisting with care and release; assisting with research to track and monitor wild populations; and other refuge management activities. Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge, located approximately 60 miles west of Houston, Texas, is one of the largest remnants of coastal prairie habitat remaining in southeast Texas and home to one of the last populations of the critically endangered Attwater's prairie-chicken, a ground-dwelling grouse of the coastal prairie ecosystem. The Student Conservation Association is a non-profit organization with a fifty-year record of recruiting, training and maintaining youth for conservation service labor projects.
Project Description: SCA recruitment, screening and selection activities are underway to provide the park with candidates for selection and placement as interns.
