Award Description: The Pima County Superior Court in conjuction with its Adult Probation Department will use its grant award to create the Drug Invovlement reversal Trhough Education, Control, and Treatment (DIRECT) Program. This program will focus on substance abusers who have a history of anti-social behavior, anti-social personalities, and-social cognition and anti-social companions characteristics; have been deemed inappropriate for Durg Court and have not been sentenced to Intensive Probation Supervision. DIRECT will target identified high-risk substance-abusing offenders of community supervision as well as those who have absconded supervision. Grant funds will support personnel costs for two teams, consisting of a probation officer and a surveillance officer, who will each supervise two caseloads of 50 probationers. DIRECT will also form an absconder team consisting of a probation officer, a surveillance officer, and support staff, and will pay for a cognitive skills instructor who will provide services to DIRECT Program participants. The probationers served through this program will come from across Pima County encompassing AZ Congressional Districts 07 and 08. Finally, funds will purchase a sports utility vehicle for reaching rural parts of the county, GPS for the vehicle, and field drug test kits.
Project Description: Notice of the grant award was received in early September. In this time period, the administrative framework for the DIRECT program was put into place and recruitment for personnel began. The absconder team received 50 new case referrals and had 7 solo apprehensions. Additional apprehensions were made with other law enforcement agencies but information on these numbers is not available at this time.
Jobs Summary: Three positions making up the absconder team were retained due the the award of these funds, probation officer - 1 FTE, surveillance officer - 1 FTE and support staff 1 FTE. These positions have transitioned into the program and are thus able to continue providing services.
