Award Description: Impact Aid School Construction Formula Grants, Recovery Act
Project Description: The grade around the school building has begun to shift away from the structure. It is necessary to rebuild and reinforce the grade to prevent shifting in the future. This remote Alaskan village does not have the equipment to properly meet the needs of the school and this project. The purchase of a front end loader with a backhoe attachment will allow the school to perform this maintenance function, as well as ongoing maintenance of the school property and grounds. Current progress includes meeting with the school board the address the needs, the formation of a committee comprised of school board members, parents, students, teachers and administrative staff to approve the purchase of the equipment mentioned above. No funds have been expended to date. The school cafeteria was built with gas fired appliances. Fuel oil is problematic to obtain. Converting the school to an all electric kitchen will resolve this situation. The village has recently installled a new power plant and will have new windmills coming on line, which will make electric power more reliable than the current fuel oil. The same committee has discusssed and approved the purchase of new all electric cafeteria equipment.
Infrastructure Description: Abating the movement of earth away from the school will save the school building. Installing electric stoves and ovens will ensure the students continue to have hot lunches.
