Award Description: Government Services Fund-For pubic safety and other government services, which may include assistance for elementary and secondary education and public institutiones of higher education, and for modernization, renovation, or repair of public school facilites and institutions of higher education facilities, including modernization, renovation, and repairs that are consistent with a recognized green building rating.
Project Description: A majority of the Government Services Funds have been allocated to the Alabama Department of Corrections to supplement budget shortages in the FY 2010 state support. This allocation will be used to fund critical Correctional operations and ensure public safety specifically, these funds will cover employee salaries and benefits for the Department of Corrections employees, in addition to contracted medical care for inmates. Without these funds, the Department of Corrections would be forced to close facilites and lay off a significant portion of the workforce; exacerbating the already overcrowded conditions in exisiting facilities and creating safety concerns for inmates, correctional staff, and the general public. The remaining Government Services Funds are still undecided.
