Award Description: RECOVERY ACT RESEARCH SUPPORT IN Automated Computation of One-loop Scattering Amplitudes
Project Description: The largest and most powerful particle collider ever built, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), is ready to start its operation at CERN (Geneva, Switzerland). In the next few years it will produce results that might confirm our understanding of the Universe, thus providing answers to the many open questions, and also revealing new fascinating scenarios. On the one hand the LHC will test more in depth the current Standard Model of particle physics and will search for the last missing particle predicted in the model, the Higgs boson. On the other hand, thanks to high energy and luminosity, the LHC will hopefully bring evidence for new phenomena that are not incorporated in the Stndard Model. Within this context, the main objective of my research work is the computation of theoretical predictions necessary for the interpretation of the experimental results, with particular attention to the LHC, as well as the development of new computational methods to accomplish this task in an efficient and automated manner. I will also try to estabilish a stronger connection between the new developements taking place at CERN and my current institution, the New York City College of Technology. This connection can be achieved by operating at different levels: through seminars within the Physics Departments of the City University of New York, where the ongoing progress at the LHC will be discussed, through the organization of presentations directed to a broader audience outside of the scientific community, and through the involvement of graduate and undergraduate students.
