Award Description: To expand Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe Summer Youth program funding. With the additional supplement of $30,699, this allowed for approximately 18 youth to work a total of 4032 hours in the summer employment program. Our total summer youth employed was 106 totaling in 19,089 hours worked for the summer 2009, which is supplemented with other youth grant from DOL and band revenue.
Project Description: TO EMPLOY ADDITIONAL 18 YOUTH FOR SUMMER EMPLOYMENT.
Jobs Summary: The MLB Summer Youth Employment Program had a total of 106 youth employed with opportunities in our Cultural Grounds as assistance with grounds keeping and ceremonies, clerical office aid, kitchen aide, outside maintenance and gardening, Elder helpers to capture mentoring/learning language opportunities and Recreational Workers working/mentoring younger children. A majority of the funding was budgeted from Band Revenue and other DOL funding, but the additional funding allowed for 18 more youth to become employed for a total of 8 weeks. Our program also had weekly Talking Circles with Band Elders instruction. (Total jobs reported: 18)
