Award Description: The overall goal of this project is to understand the role of supermassive black holes in galaxy merger events and galaxy evolution. We use laser guide star adaptive optics at the Keck Observatory to study black holes and their environments in the nuclei of galaxies. Outcomes (in the form of peer-reviewed papers) include a spectroscopic survey of nearby late-stage galaxy mergers, and an imaging survey of more distant galaxies in which there is kinematic evidence for more than one active black hole
