Award Description: URS -Washington Division has been allocated $37 million dollars as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) for de-activation and demolition services at the Separations Process Research Unit at the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory. The ARRA scope is part of a larger base program to characterize, deactivate and demolish former nuclear research facilities that were operated from 1950 to 1953 as a pilot plant to research chemical processes to extract uranium and plutonium from irradiated uranium. This funding is being used to replace reduced base program funding and retain and/or create jobs for demolition, remediation and management professionals. As a condition of the funding, the project will be accelerated by approximately 3 months for a schedule completion date of September 30, 2011. Major deliverables and milestones include major electrical isolation to prepare buildings for demolition and the construction of an access road in FY 2009, conducting decontamination and demolition of former nuclear research facilities (the ?G2? and ?H2? buildings) in 2010, and completing all demolition and soil backfill activities in FY 2011. The removal of these nuclear research facilities represents a footprint reduction of approximately 50,000 square feet.
Project Description: This quarter's ARRA activities have been specifically involved with the characterization, dismantlement load and shipping and disposal of contaminated and non-contaminated material from the G2 and H2 buildings at Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory. The footprint reduction was approximately 3,454 cubic feet. Also, an access road was built to increase efficiency of access in to the work areas. These activities created 10 jobs and retained 45 additional positions.
Jobs Summary: The total number of 55 FTE?s during the reporting period is a combination of jobs created and retained: 10 FTE?s were specifically created to accelerate asbestos remediation and involved asbestos professionals and their supervisors; and 45 FTE?s were retained to support the characterization, dismantlement, remediation, shipping, loading and disposal of contaminated and non contaminated material. Of the total 55 FTE?s, 11 jobs were direct hire and 44 jobs were subcontractors (Total jobs reported: 55)
Project Status: Less Than 50% Completed
