Project Description: Providing technical and professional services in support of the 50 NOAA NMFS American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) projects to restore wetlands, salt marsh, oyster and coral reefs, as well as remove fish passage barriers on coastal rivers and streams. While we are working to improve the environment, these efforts will also restore fisheries and support more resilient coasts in the face of climate change. Two examples of these projects include -- A submerged breakwater reef will be created along two stretches of Alabama shoreline, protecting more than 18 acres of habitat for submerged aquatic vegetation and creating almost two acres of oyster reef. The submerged reefs will protect more than a mile of coastal habitat by reflecting erosive wave energy away from the shoreline, unlike traditional erosion protection structures that contribute to habitat loss. -- This project will focus on the restoration of Caribbean Acropora coral (staghorn and elkhorn coral) which has experienced widespread and catastrophic declines since the late 1970's. Coral populations will be enhanced at degraded reefs in eight distinct areas of the coral reef ecosystems of Florida and the USVI by propagating Acropora corals in seafloor nurseries and then transplanting nursery-grown coral fragments to depleted reef sites.

Jobs Summary: The ten positions created are Marine Biologists working to restore wetlands, salt marsh, oyster and coral reefs, as well as remove fish passage barriers on coastal rivers and streams. In addition to improving the environment, these efforts will restore fisheries and support more resilient coasts in the face of climate change. (Total jobs reported: 10)
