Award Description: The Genetics of Innate Immunity and Disease Resistance in Reef-Building corals
Project Description: Since receiving the funds in late June 2009, we have completed our year 1 field experiments and genetic collections for our downstream genetic analyses of the innate immune response of corals. We have also completed our year 1 objective of obtaining the full transcriptome sequence from Acropora cervicornis 6 months ahead of schedule and are annotating the genetic data for publication. In addition, we have processed half of the genetic samples for the RNA-sequencing analyses of gene expression. The funds use thus far have paid for the fieldwork for myself and three PhD students, funded an RA summer salary to S. Libro and 1 month summer salary for myself, and paid for the next-generation sequencing of the transcriptome.
