Award Description: The CDBG-R grant will be used to create safer, more environmentally conscious streetscapes and road infrastructure within a low and moderate- income neighborhood. The project will also allow for better pedestrian movement and vehicular access to the surrounding businesses.
Project Description: Install traffic-calming devices along a 3/4 mile strip of Knox Road to improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists. The proposal includes a raised crosswalk, bulbouts, bike lanes, landscaped medians and defined parking areas.
Infrastructure Description: The Knox Rd. Traffic Calming Project (CDBG-R) will provide targeted assistance to the City of Chandler by installing traffic-calming devices along a 3/4-mile strip of Knox Rd. to improve the safety for pedestrians and bicyclists. The City's Consolidated Plan calls for improving streetscapes and infrastructure in deteriorated areas, developing projects that support the local workforce, and becoming more environmentally friendly, all of which are accomplished with this project. The CDBG-R funds will assist those impacted by the recession by creating much needed construction and specialty labor jobs, employing approximately 49 people to build the improvements. This investment in transportation will provide long-term economic benefit to the businesses that face Knox Rd., as the proposal will include additional on-street parking to allow for better vehicular access. In addition, the infrastructure planned with the use of CDBG-R will be more environmentally conscious as a result of the added green space and landscaped medians.
