Award Description: This program is designed to improve the infrastructure in the National School Lunch Program, with priority given to schools in which at least 50% of the students are eligible for free or reduced-price meals. Fifty-one school districts, alternative schools and residential childcare institutions were awarded $1 million for the purchase of school food service equipment. The equipment will improve food safety, service and quality as well as reduce energy use. Walk-in refrigerators, walk-in freezers, ovens and dishwashers were popular choices for purchase.
Project Description: Sub-recipients report these funds either have been or will be used to purchase equipment such as energy-efficient dishwashers, walk-in freezers, refrigerators, ovens, serving line equipment, stoves, and compressors. Sub-recipients report these purchases will help to improve the quality and safety of food, improve energy efficiency of school food service operations, and allow sponsors to support expanded participation in a school meal program. Many purchases have been made but not all sub-recipients have requested reimbursement.
