Award Description: Invest in public transportation by purchasing new paratransit vans, constructing bicycle parking facilities at transit stations, providing bus stop/customer enhancements, extending Silver Line bus rapid transit service to South Station, improving ventilation and air quality within Back Bay Station and repairing fencing along transit rights of way.
Project Description: As of 9/30/09, this grant has allowed the MBTA to put 70 new paratransit vans in service (with delivery pending on another 38 vans), begin construction of the Silver Line service extension to South Station, initiate final design for bus stop and bicycle parking enhancements, and start procurement process for a fencing project.
Infrastructure Description: This grant will be used to procure 108 paratransit vans, provide bicycle parking facilities at up to 50 stations, provide bus stop and service enhancements along key bus routes, extend Silver Line bus rapid transit service to South Station, improve ventilation and air quality and Back Bay Station, and repair fencing along transit rights of way. As such, these projects will invest in transportation, environmental protection, and other infrastructure that will provide long-term economic benefits. The projects will also contribute toward creating jobs and promoting economic recovery.
