Award Description: NIH-INBRE Community Engagement Admin Supplement Expand and evaluate outreach to older adults, and their families, who are affected by cancer.

Project Description: The goals of this community-based participatory research study are to: 1) Expand outreach to older adults affected by cancer and their family caregivers in Delaware. This will include using community stakeholders to guide the researchers in expanding outreach to the elderly in Delaware; employing a CBPR approach to individualize outreach interventions by cancer cluster geography, site type, age and ethnicity/race; utilizing the CCC telephone-based support program; and implementing the recommendations for outreach; Evaluation: The number of callers in each age group will be determined. Among the elderly (age ¿ 65), groups will be extended to 65-75, 76-85, 86-95, ¿ 96. Associations between age groups and demographic (race/ethnicity, gender, education level, marital status), and clinical (type of cancer) patient characteristics will be examined using chi-square and Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel statistics. 2) Evaluate outreach to older adults affected by cancer and their family caregivers in Delaware. Evaluation: Evaluation will include tracking of the CCC telephone-based support program including the volume of calls and caller satisfaction, in each of the eight cancer clusters in Delaware. Data extraction from the study database will be repeated 15 months after implementation of the outreach program. Chi- square and Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel statistics will first be used to compare the frequency of patients in each age group between the baseline and post-implementation period. 3) Develop a model to sustain outreach to older adults affected by cancer and their family caregivers in Delaware. Evaluation: Evaluation will include developing a business plan with fee structure for outreach contracts; evaluating program growth; and creating a model that captures the crucial elements of outreach.
