Award Description: The main purpose of this study is to develop a convergence theory for the immersed boundary method, a popular numerical method for fluid-structure interaction problems. We expect this study to place the immersed boundary and related numerical methods on a firm theoretical footing which would form the basis for further algorithmic development. The PI and his student Yang Liu have been working to extend previous convergence results by the PI. We have obtained preliminary results for convergence of the pressure field in stationary Stokes flow. We are also in the course of developing a framework to prove convergence of the immersed boundary method for general elliptic problems under a broad class of finite difference discretizations. In another project, Stephen McIntyre, a student of the PI, has started to explore ideas for developing better implicit schemes for the immersed boundary method.
