Award Description: We propose the purchase of a KAPPA APEX II DUO single crystal X-ray diffractometer. We request funding for a dual wavelength system with co-mounted sealed tube sources, which will allow for the use of Mo radiation for inorganic structures and Cu radiation for organic molecules, with very facile switching of wavelength. The system includes the APEX II 16 Megapixel CCD detector, a single-module 62 mm 4k x 4k CCD area detector with high counting efficiency, low noise and large capacity - gain of 170 electrons per Mo x-ray photon/85 electrons per Cu x-ray. Included is a nitrogen cryostat which will represent a significant improvement from our current system. We also request funding for a helium cryostat which will allow for very low temperature data collection in certain application.

Project Description: A purchase order was submitted for the instrument requested in our proposal, a Kappa Apex II CCD X-Ray Diffractometer from Bruker Instruments. The order was placed with Bruker by UW Purchasing on August 18, 2009 with an anticipated shipping date of November 25, 2009.
