Award Description: Initiative for Minority Student Development at UNC-Chapel Hill-ARRA

Project Description: 1. Provide uniform coaching for classes ? A weekly review session has been established for five core graduate classes 15 students are participating. 2. Individual Development Plans are developed for each URM student ? IMSD staff met with six students and their research mentors to access skills and develop a strategy to strengthen any weaknesses. All six graduate students are now being coached in organizational skills, background knowledge or critical thinking and analysis of scientific literature. 3. Enhance training in critical analysis of scientific literature and scientific writing ? A semi-monthly critical analysis of scientific literature journal club has been established. The first session was September 22nd. 4. Enhance biostatistics training ? A short course in biostatistics is being planned. The course will use excel and be based on research data from UNC faculty labs. 5. Establish a database of all biomedical graduate students 6. Establish a Pre-Graduate program ? Eleven Post Baccalaureate students have been placed in labs. ? We are hosting a GRE weekly review session. ? A GRE weekly competition blog has been established to support URM student?s preparation for the GRE and thus graduate school.

Original jobs created/retained estimate: 5.25 Narrative: A requisition for a Pre-Graduate Coordinator Position has been submitted and a candidate identified that will start in January. In the interim, a temporary employee (Dr. Paul Medina) was hired to fill this position. A requisition for an Academic Coordinator Position has been submitted and a candidate identified that will start in December. Ashalla Freeman was hired as the IMSD coordinator. She is leading the IMSD community building events and the IDP process. Cicely Mithcell and Christian Douglass were hired as Biostatistics Instructors and are developing the Biostatistics short course that will be held in January. Ann Marie Bartholomew was hired to input data into Strategic Evaluations Data Base. (Total jobs reported: 3)
