Award Description: The funds awarded will purchase a MALDI mass spectrometer that will support the exploding numbers of diverse and interdisciplinary research projects requiring analysis and characterization of synthetic macromolecules and biomacromolecules that cannot be adequately studied by any other means. The multi-user instrument will support the research of groups at Drexel University and at other universities in the greater Philadelphia area. The geographical reach of the MALDI mass spectrometer will be extended through bi-yearly MALDI workshops with Delaware State University, an HBCU. Qualified chemistry students from Drexel and from Delaware State will participate jointly in each workshop, which will be run jointly by faculty from Drexel and Delaware State.

Project Description: This quarter the instrument will be constructed and delivered. The actual installation will probably occur at the beginning of next quarter. This quarter, faculty at Drexel along with our colleagues at Delaware State University will begin to plan the details of the joint MALDI workshops.

Jobs Summary: As PI, I estimate that the equivalent of at least one complete full-time job has been retained. If this order had not been placed with the funds awarded by NSF, termination of one full-time job would have occurred this year. The activities comprising one equivalent full-time employee (FTE) include (1) the vendor’s professional sales expert who worked to assist Drexel (the awardee) in comparing instruments, evaluating what instrument design would serve our needs, and advising us as to which accessories to include; (2) the vendor’s engineering and technical staff who are now working to construct this sophisticated instrument and who do not work unless a purchase order has been provided; (3) the vendor’s technician who will spend several days installing the instrument on Drexel’s premises; and (4) the vendor’s instructor who will provide extensive operational training to Drexel users. (Total jobs reported: 1)

Project Status: Less Than 50% Completed
